CANTON — Women’s Fly-Fishing School will run from March 7-9 at the Lake Logan Center on 154 Suncrest Mill Road – offered by the Brookside Guides.
This fly fishing session for women will include two levels of instruction. Basic fly fishing skills will be covered in the first level course, while the upper-level course will address advanced fly casting and fishing techniques.

ALBANY, NY (10/12/2007; 1701)(readMedia)– Despite some rain and lower temperatures during recent days, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will be extending the delayed opening of the fly fishing catch-and-release season along ¼ of a mile on the Salmon River in Altmar, Oswego County. As a result of the recent drought, the start date for the 2007 lower Salmon River fly fishing catch-and-release area will be delayed to November 15 for this small portion of the river. The ¼ -mile-long lower fly fishing area runs from the County Route 52 bridge in Altmar upstream to just below the mouth of Beaverdam Brook and is the staging area for trout and salmon waiting to enter DEC's Salmon River Hatchery. DEC will be filing emergency regulations to delay the season opening in order to provide necessary protection to the fish in the lower fly area to ensure that enough fish will enter the hatchery to meet salmon egg requirements for hatchery production. read more

Sturgeon fishing in upper Suisun Bay has been excellent, with good numbers of big sturgeon as well as oversized fish to 90 inches, Kevin Yost of Lucky Strike Fishing said. Anglers are on a good bass bite for fish to 4 pounds, using dropshotted 4- to 6-inch shad-colored plastics, or Berserk jigs 25-30 feet deep off rocky ledges all over the lake. Diana Mello of A-1 Bait and Tackle in Snelling reported slow trout action 35-40 feet deep in front of the dam near suspended bait balls with blade/'crawlers, pink Apex lures or Wedding Rings tipped with a 'crawler behind a dodger. Salmon fishing has been slow, but Roger Thomas said there was a recent big improvement with some good numbers of salmon from 18 to 33 pounds taken off the Marin County coast and providing some hope for a new wave of bigger fish moving into the area. read more

The West's best native rainbow trout fishing kicks into overdrive this month in the Sacramento River below Shasta Dam, with 20- to 60-fish days the rule, not the exception. I recall my first outing on the Sacramento River back in 1970 when I wrote a story for The Record about catching beautifully marked rainbows, with flame red sides and broad backs, that averaged better than 4 pounds. Greg Kennedy at the Fly Shop in Redding said he believes there are more monster trout per mile in the Sacramento River than in any other river in the West. For variety, anglers also might consider going for the "grand slam" – rainbow trout to 5 pounds, steelhead to 7 pounds and king salmon to 25 pounds – all on the same outing. read more
